In a conversation with India Today, Bollywood icon Kajol revealed a surprising secret about her early days in the film industry. The talented actress, known for her powerful performances in hits like “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” and “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” confessed that she almost gave up on her acting career after just three films.
Kajol’s latest project, “Do Patti,” marks a new milestone in her illustrious career, as she dons the uniform of a police officer for the first time. But little did her fans know that two decades ago, she was on the verge of calling it quits.
Kajol’s Burnout at 18
“I did a film long back called Udhaar Ki Zindagi. That was, I think, my third film. I was very new. I must have been about 17 or 18 at that time,” Kajol reminisced. After wrapping up “Udhaar Ki Zindagi,” Kajol felt exhausted and demotivated. “I remember turning around and telling my mother at that time, ‘You know, mom, I’m done. Wow. I’m burnt out. At the tender age of 18-and-a-half, I am done. I cannot move anymore. I cannot cry anymore. I cannot put glycerine anymore. I don’t want to do these films anymore. I want to do, you know, four scenes, ten songs.'”
Shah Rukh Khan‘s Timely Advice
It was during this tumultuous period that Shah Rukh Khan, a close friend and frequent co-star, stepped in with words of wisdom. “Shah Rukh was like, ‘you know you just have to learn how to act,'” Kajol recalled. Initially dismissive of his advice, Kajol soon realized the value of honing her craft. “I was like, what is this? What is he talking about? Of course, I’m doing a fabulous job.”
A Second Chance
Kajol’s conversation with Shah Rukh Khan proved to be a turning point. She signed on for more light-hearted films, including “Gunda Raj” and “Hulchul,” which allowed her to recharge and refocus. “That’s where I learnt the technique of acting after that,” she acknowledged.
